How Ice Cream is Made: A Sweet Science

Ice cream is a beloved treat, but have you ever wondered how it’s made? The process begins with a simple mixture of cream, milk, sugar, and flavorings. This base is pasteurized—heated to a high temperature to kill any bacteria—before being cooled and mixed with stabilizers and emulsifiers to improve texture and consistency.

Once the base is ready, it's churned in a freezing machine. As the mixture freezes, the churning process incorporates air, giving ice cream its smooth, creamy texture. The ice cream continues to freeze and harden until it reaches the perfect consistency, ready for packaging.

From there, it’s time to add the fun stuff—chunks of fruit, chocolate chips, or swirls of caramel. After the flavorings are added, the ice cream is hardened further in a freezer, ensuring it’s scoopable and delicious.

And just like that, a basic mixture of milk, sugar, and cream is transformed into the creamy, frozen dessert we all love!
