Facts on Ice Cream - Tips and Facts About Ice Cream

Looking for some facts on ice cream? You've come to the right place! Did you know that there are legal standards for this frozen treat? What's the difference between an expensive, high-quality and cheap frozen treats? How can it stay soft and be frozen solid? These questions will be answered in this article.
Facts on Ice Cream...What's It Made Of?
Ever wanted to know what this frozen treat is made of? Of course, we've all heard that many brands make our favorite frozen food with seaweed. Is this true? Well, sort of. Many have carrageenan in it, which is a gum extracted from seaweed.
The Facts...Just What Makes the Cut?
Your favorite frozen food is a government regulated. In order to "pass" regulations, it must have at least 20% milk solids, at least 10% milk fat, at the most .02% emulsifiers, and at the most 0.5% stabilizers. In the end, a gallon of this frozen goodness is required to weigh at least 4.5 pounds. This is because adding air to this tasty treat can actually double its volume!
Fun Facts on Ice Cream...Why is it Soft and Frozen?
If you're like many, you've got this frozen treat in your freezer at all times. As you glace in your freezer, you look at the other items in the freezer and they are frozen solid, but you look over at your favorite frozen dessert and it's nice and soft. Why is that?
This frozen dessert is made up of fat globules, sugar, ice crystals and air. The way these ingredients are put together prevents it from freezing solid.
Fat globules make this delicious frozen treat creamy and rich. Ice crystals trap of fat globules and sugars within crystalline structures. And of course, dissolved sugar lowers the freezing point. Your favorite frozen dessert doesn't freeze solid because of its composition.
Fun Facts about Ice Cream...What's the Quality?
Taste is often the only thing we need to determine the quality. But, by looking at the facts on ice cream, you can determine its quality. "Super premium" has 16% fat while average ice cream only has 12% fat. Want to know what 50% of the cheap stuff is made out of? I hope these facts on ice cream didn't leave you lightheaded!

8 Old Time Nostalgic Candy Favorites

Reminiscing back to our childhood days brings back many memories and how we all wish we could relive those days again, right? In the modern age that we are living in, it is good to know there are still some things that have remained unchanged over the decades. And what better way is there to relive those childhood memories than to indulge ourselves with some nostalgic candy?
Nostalgic candy not only satisfies our taste buds, but most importantly, it brings back the youth in us. I am certain that each and every one of us has our own personal favorites but here's my pick of the best nostalgic candy still readily available.
  1. Nerds Candy. This candy comes in a variety of flavors including wild cherry, watermelon, grape and strawberry and is definitely a wonkalicious creation. The tangy taste and tiny but crunchy texture of this candy is just amazing and is far too good for anyone to resist the temptation.

  2. Tootsie Rolls. Chewy chocolate candies which are usually wrapped in wax paper. This candy has been manufactured for over 100 years and is truly one of the most classic candies of all time.

  3. Walnettos. These chewy and soft caramel candies are filled with California walnuts and it has been the candy of choice since the 1920s. In the United States, Walnettos were considered to be the top selling candies and featured in the popular comedy program entitled "Laugh-In".

  4. Hershey's Kisses. These are one of the most popular brands of candy in the USA today and have been manufactured for more than 100 years. They are elegantly wrapped chocolate pieces with a strip of paper that says "kiss". One piece of this delicious chocolate melts in your mouth and will leave you wanting more.

  5. Bazooka Bubble Gums. This chewing gum was introduced to the world right shortly after the end of World War II. The Strawberry flavor became a hit and is the most favored flavor. You will also notice how patriotic the packaging is with its color combination of red, white and blue.

  6. Licorice Candy. This old-fashioned and twisted candy has been marked as an all-time favorite of many generations. It has a soft and chewy texture and on top of that has the smell of the licorice extract.

  7. Cherry Mash. Made from chopped roasted nuts with chocolate coating and cherry fondant in the center it is also considered to be one of the earliest well known candies dating back to World War I. From Cherry Chase, the candy's name was changed to Cherry Chaser and later on, it was finally named as the Cherry Mash.

  8. Nik L Nip. This is certainly a catchy name, right? Nik L Nips were created in the early 1900s and are made out of wax bottles which are filled with different fruit flavors. The name originated by combining the cost of a "Nickel" and the method in which the wax bottle was opened, which was to "Nip" off its top.
Childhood has to be one of the most fun and exciting times of our lives. As we grow older. We can always reminisce on our childhood by simply grabbing a pack of nostalgic candy. After all, it is always nice to treat ourselves once in a while.

How To Make Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie

This is a delicious twist on the classic pumpkin pie recipe, and even easier to make. The only baking in this recipe is for the crust. This is a great dessert to serve at a Halloween party, as dessert (or one of the desserts) at Thanksgiving dinner, or for any other time that you have a taste for pumpkin.
Ingredients:
CRUST
1 ½ cups ginger cookie crumbs
½ stick (4 tablespoons) butter, melted
FILLING
1 quart vanilla bean ice cream
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
½ teaspoon ground ginger
(optional) assorted dried fruit for decoration
1. Heat the oven to 350ºF. In a 9 inch pie plate, combine the ginger cookie crumbs and melted butter. Once the butter is evenly distributed throughout the cookie crumbs, press the crumbs into the bottom and sides of the pie plate. Use a ½ cup measuring cup to press into the cookie crumb crust to even out the thickness of the bottom and sides of the crust.
2. Bake the ginger cookie crust for 5 minutes at 350ºF. After the 5 minutes, remove the crust from the oven and allow it to cool completely.
3. While the crust is cooling, take the ice cream out of the freezer and allow it to sit at room temperature for 15 minutes. Once the ice cream has become softened from sitting out, scoop it into a large mixing bowl. Stir the ice cream with a spoon until it becomes broken up, then add the pumpkin, brown sugar, and spices. Stir the the mixture until all of the ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the ice cream.
4. Pour the pumpkin ice cream mixture into the cooled crust. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight.
5. If you are making this pie for a Halloween party or gathering, decorate the pie with a variety of dried fruits to create a jack-o'-lantern face. Let the pie sit out at room temperature for about 10 minutes prior to slicing, so it will be easier to slice.
6. Serve and enjoy this delicious pumpkin ice cream pie!
Makes 8 servings.

Most Popular Ice Cream Toppings

Americans love their ice cream, consuming about 30 liters per person a year. From "jimmies" to hot fudge, it is the toppings that really are the cherry on top of this multi-billion dollar industry.
Once upon a time, an ice cream shop customer only had a couple of choices if they wanted to add a topping to their favorite frozen dessert. Now there are almost as many frozen dessert topping options as there are flavors of this special frozen treat.
Top 10 most popular toppings
1. Hot Fudge - this classic topping is still number one according to most consumers. Warm, gooey chocolate dripping over your favorite frozen treat flavor - what's not to love?
2. Caramel - There must be something about the contrast between the ice-cold dessert and a warm, sweet topping because caramel came in a close second to hot fudge.
3. Oreo cookie crumbles - that's the way the cookie crumbles. Oreo crumbs, more than any other cookie topping, are a favorite topping of both the young and old.
4. M&Ms - a less messy way to get tasty chocolate on your dessert.
5. Whipped Cream - you can't have a hot fudge sundae without topping it with whipped cream. A lot of people like to top their milkshakes off with whipped cream as well.
6. Sprinkles - whether rainbow sprinkles or chocolate sprinkles (sometimes called jimmies) this is a favorite ice cream topping of young children.
7. Peanut butter Cups - as if peanut butter and chocolate alone weren't delicious enough, added to a scoop frozen dessert, it become one of the most popular ice cream toppings.
8. Chocolate Chips - White or dark chocolate, sprinkled over the top or stirred in, chocolate chips are an easy choice for favorite topping.
9. Strawberry sauce - Poured over the top of vanilla ice cream, this topping tastes almost like fresh strawberry pie.
10. Cherry - what would a hot fudge sundae or whipped cream topped milkshake be without this quintessential ice cream topping?

Why do Americans and Canadians celebrate Labor Day? - Kenneth C. Davis

In the United States and Canada, the first Monday of September is a federal holiday, Labor Day. Originally celebrated in New York City's Union Square in 1882, Labor Day was organized by unions as a rare day of rest for the overworked during the Industrial Revolution. Kenneth C. Davis illustrates the history of Labor Day from Union Square to today.
