ULTIMATE Ice Cream Terminology : Cone

A cookie-like wafer shaped into a cone (sometimes the same dough or cookie is molded into a cup or another shape). Cones enable ice cream eaters to consume the treat out of hand and without a spoon. According to several sources, the first ice cream cone was created by Ernest Hamwi for the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.

Traditionally, it’s made from a cookie dough or batter which is pressed into a round, waffle-patterned sheet that is then rolled into a cone while warm. Today, there are several different styles, including waffle cones, made from a batter; sugar cones, made from a sweet dough; and wafer cones, made from a starch mixture that is molded and baked into crispy but light cone shapes. Double cones have two openings at the top of the cone to allow for two scoops of ice cream to be placed side-by-side. (The single cone is also known as a "poke" in Northern Ireland and Scotland.)

Choco Taco, What Is It?

Choco Taco is a Good Humor-Breyers ice cream novelty resembling a taco. It consists of a disk of waffle cone material folded to resemble a hard taco shell, reduced-fat vanilla ice cream, artificially flavored fudge, peanuts, and a milk chocolate coating. The "Choco Taco" is marketed under the Klondike brand as "The Original Ice Cream Taco".

Invented in Philadelphia in the early 1980s by Alan Drazen, Senior Vice President of the Jack and Jill Ice Cream Company, it was first rolled out in 1984 when it became popular in mobile vending trucks and convenience stores. It made its first appearance in supermarkets nationwide when Good Humor-Breyers (who were manufacturing it in Richmond, Virginia) promoted it in 1996 as "America's coolest taco," at the Supermarket Industry Convention in Chicago.

In 1998, Unilever introduced the Choco Taco to Italy under the name Winner Taco through its subsidiary Algida. In 1999 it was introduced in Sweden through another subsidiary, GB Glace, under the same name. In 2000 the Winner Taco was retired from the Italian and Swedish market. After two years of campaigning by Taco fans however, in January 2014 Algida announced on their Facebook page the return of the Winner Taco in Italy. GB Glace also re-introduced the ice cream to Sweden in 2014.

In 1999, the company improved the product, incorporating a shell which stayed crisper, and introduced new packaging. The same year, the company introduced a Klondike Cookies & Cream Choco Taco, containing cookies and cream ice cream and covered with cookie pieces. Choco Tacos have also been sold at some Taco Bell restaurants.

What is Magic Shell?

Magic Shell is a dessert product produced by Smucker’s in the US, originally created as Ice Magic by Cottees in Australia, and sold in the UK as Bird's Ice Magic. It is a syrup that quickly hardens into a crispy shell when poured onto a cold surface, which is the origin of the product's name. The syrup is primarily designed for use on ice cream. It comes in several flavours, including chocolate, caramel, chocolate fudge, cupcake, cherry, and smores in addition to two unique flavours—One with chocolate, caramel, and pecans, which the company calls "Turtle Delight", and a flavour based upon the candy bars Twix, Hersheys, and Reeses.

In Australia, where the product was first invented, it is made by Cottees; called Ice Magic, it is sold in chocolate, mint chocolate, honeycomb chocolate, and strawberry flavours. It is not to be stored in a refrigerator, as it may harden, and will not pour. If this should happen, however, the bottle can be microwaved (without the lid) or placed in hot water for a short time to return the contents to a desired pouring consistency.

In the UK, the product was available as Bird's Ice Magic.

The "shell" effect in Magic Shell is due to the presence of coconut oil and sunflower oil, both of which contain high amounts of saturated fat, and sugar, which produces a chocolate mixture which is solid at higher temperatures than would otherwise be the case with normal ice cream topping. Contrary to what many people believe, paraffin wax is not an ingredient of Magic Shell.

ULTIMATE Ice Cream Terminology : Candy, Chocolate, or Magic shell

A dip for ice cream cones. The base flavor is mixed with coconut oil or melted butter so that when it comes into contact with ice cream, it freezes or hardens instantly, forming a crunchy candy-like coating around the ice cream. Often it’s made with chocolate, but also comes in strawberry and other flavors. Magic Shell is the brand name used by Smucker’s.

Milkshake

A milkshake (sometimes simply called a shake) is a sweet beverage made by blending milk, ice cream, and flavorings or sweeteners such as butterscotch, caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, fruit syrup, or whole fruit into a thick, sweet, cold mixture. It may also be made using a base made from non-dairy products, including plant milks such as almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk.

Milkshakes originated in the United States around the turn of the 20th century, and grew in popularity following the introduction of electric blenders in the subsequent two decades. They became a common part of youth popular culture, as ice cream shops were a culturally acceptable meeting place for youth, and milkshakes became symbolic of the innocence of youth.
